OCD, Anxiety and Handwashing
My son's hands are chapped and bleeding from washing them so much. He is so afraid of "germs" especially since the high profile of H1N1 flu, even though he is vaccinated. He questions everyone if they have washed their hands (home and school). His anxiety levels are rising, it is so hard to watch. He completely lost it a couple of months ago when I told him I would have to walk to the car to get a wipe after using the porta potties at the beach. On the ground. So far no lotions have been able to keep up with the handwashing and Purell use. I consulted with our neurologist and developmental pediatrician this last week, who both thought we should consider medication, as we have maxed out on behavioral approaches. He just shatters before he can even think through his anxiety. I guess we have reached the point of medication trial, as the behavioral approach is not helping enough. Sigh.

I used to be totally opposed to meds in young kids.
Now I recognize that while they are not a panacea, they can certainly be very useful in certain situations, such as you describe.
Happy New Year!

He has washed his hands over 100 times some days. There is no lotion that can stand up to that. His developmental pedi said that this is going to effect him with social progress at school, he will become more alienated if he quizes kids coming out of the bathroom if they washed their hands.
This has been very hard to watch and, of course, it is not fun to add another diagnosis to the list.
I have been encouraged by some moms who have been there, done it, with good results (low dose Prozac). It makes me feel better to know it has helped other kids his age.
It's very hard to see his beautiful little hands bleeding and raw.
Sorry you guys are going through this. I know you're loath to medicate your child, but sounds like the risk/benefit ratio has tipped solidly in one direction.
You've probably tried everything, but I had some serious chapping wayy back in the mists of time when I worked as a vet tech; the heavy-duty Eucerin (in a tub) helped. A friend swears by Am-lactin.
Oh, dear.
I had a sort of tailspin of anxiety a couple of months ago. The point is you can't think and can't process new information.
So I would add to the DP's comment about social issues generally not getting what is going on academically.
Here's how one mom I know thought about using medications to treat her son's anxiety -- "He's on 'drugs' already -- when he's having an anxiety episode, his brain is flooded with stress hormones. The prescribed meds are just going to regularize things.".
If he will tolerate it, either Bag Balm (in the green tin) or Corona ointment and gloves, at bedtime, can help the healing. (Both are somewhat sticky, which may not be acceptable, tactile-wise).
I will not allow people to post SPAM, especially for quack treatments.
